Is It Orange or Is It Yellow? from Melinda's Cutting Garden

Video is at the bottom of this post.

I am not sure if this is an orange or yellow dahlia. But oh, I love them so much. There are some beautiful dahlias on show at certain times of the year at the Fort Bragg Botanical Gardens. I was in heaven. This is one of the pictures I took and started when I got home. Could not wait to make it into an art quilt. I did a video of the process of making this flower. I am also showing you the steps I take to make my art quilts. I ...

Belvedere's Bel Air from Quilt Doodle Doodles...

It's certainly not too early to think about the holidays. I've had this new design drawn up and ready to try in my studio for a year now. It's not that I didn't want to make it, it's just other things had to come first and this sweet design featuring Belvedere kept getting pushed to the back burner. It wasn't until I got some extra help from my sis that I finally have some design, sewing time. My days fly by so quickly that it's been really nice having the extra help stuffing ...

Baby Bear Trio! from Quilt Doodle Doodles

I know, I know..... more bears. This is the last of my bear designs. I just needed to make a design with three baby bears playing in the woods. They could be playing peek a boo, or hiding from their mama. Last year when I saw this trio, they were crossing the road hubby and I were taking to go home from a vacation at the lake in Northern Minnesota. We saw mama bear cross the road first and then her babies, one by one. I was so excited I couldn't hold onto my phone right to take a ...

Papa Bear from Quilt Doodle Doodles

Many of you know that I am in love with bears. I saw another bear just recently when hubby and I were on a trip up north in July. We were driving home on a rural road after visiting a shop that sold wild rice. I always try to pick up a pound or two when ever we are in Northern Minnesota. The bear was quite some distance away, but still a thrill to see! He had disappeared back into the woods by the time we were close enough to see him. While doodling the other day, I came up ...

Goldfinch from Quilt Doodle Doodles

We celebrated my nieces graduation a couple weekends ago. The tables were decorated with vases of wildflowers freshly picked that morning. It was such a beautiful detail and I was smitten with the yellow flowers which my sis told me were gray headed coneflowers.

These lovely flowers were the inspiration for my new Goldfinch design. I dug thru my fabric and found the perfect shades of fabric to complete my design and I bet you have fabric that will work for this sweet appliqué design too!

I spent a morning doodling and came up with an adorable design featuring a ...

3 Zinnia: Class #1 from Melinda's Cutting Garden

Video Class is at the bottom of this blog.

The history of making the 3 Zinnia quilt starts several years ago with me dying fabrics for my upcoming classes at the International Quilt Festival in Houston. I had seen past students having trouble with color and values and I thought that if I could make kits, they would all be successful and that is all a good instructor wants -  for their students to be successful.  So I became a dyeing machine. Morning, noon, and night, I was in the dying studio (the garage) working on perfecting my colors.  It was ...

Zinnias on Parade from Melinda's Cutting Garden

What is a Saturday without a new video post from me?  I made a new video called Zinnias on Parade - these are pictures from classes I've taught all over the country and at big shows. I thought you might like to see students' progress in a one day, 6-hour class.  These beauties are in different stages of development and some of the fabrics used for these flowers were made from my hand-dyed fabrics (made in my garage) from back in the day.  Some are the student’s own fabrics, too, and they are all beautiful no matter what fabric ...

Well, here's the last class in the Dogwood series.  I've has much fun teaching you this pattern and I hope you are having fun, too, making a beautiful Dogwood quilt.

It's hard to write a post and watch a very smart and active granddaughter but I am trying.
Pool time!  It's 100 degrees and the air conditioning went out...

First, grandpa has to get her out of the sink...

...then grandpa gave her a cream cheese bagel in the living room.

I will be introducing new patterns and kits in the future but the Dogwood ...

Rockets Red Glare from Nestlings By Robin

LOOK what hit mailboxes
last week!!
The July issue is now out
and yours truly
has a new quilt within
titled, 'Rockets Red Glare'.
THANK YOU Connecting Threads for
the perfect fabric line,
Hometown Americana II.
It saddens me that so many quilters
feel overwhelmed by applique'
because, to me, it is such a
creative and relaxing form of quilting.
Yes, there are sometimes
many pieces to handle but
no more than some of
the pieced quilts I have seen.
There are times that even I look
at one of my designs and ask,
"who designed all this work?".
Then ...

Dogwood Class #3 "Finishing Your Petals and Leaves" from Melinda's Cutting Garden

Welcome back, the link to the third class in the Dogwood series is below.  There's a lot of information I need to cover in this video. I love my flower - I just got it done last Thursday and I cannot wait to get the thread play going.  This video, at 90 minutes, is longer than the first two.  I did not want to split it into shorter classes because so many of you are ready to get started. You can stop the video, work on your flower, then start it up again.

I do want you to watch the ...
